Disability
Benoît had his right leg amputated above the knee in 1995, after being diagnosed with bone cancer in 1993. Total or partial limb amputations occur because the affected limb is no longer functional, due to impairment caused by trauma, disease, infection or defect at birth. The level of amputation will depend on the location and severity of impairment. Most amputees can be fitted with a prosthetic leg, knee or ankle, placed over the remaining part of the amputated limb, known as the "stump".
According to Jean Labonté
“Over the years Benoît has fulfilled the often-overlooked role of backup goaltender and he has always put the team's success before his own. He and Paul Rosen form, without a doubt, the best duo in the game. Benoît reminds me of Brian Hayward back when he played with Patrick Roy. He is a talented and dependable goaltender and he's always ready to answer the bell.”
